LuxVue made “a technical breakthrough in displays,” according to venture capitalist John Doer.
Doer explains that the micro-LED displays featured in these patents are nine times brighter yet use much less power than required by other displays today. Doer mentions that 90% of the power associated with a smartphone is used to power the display.8
In 2014, LuxVue filed an innovative set of display technology patents which after its acquisition were reassigned to Apple. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but LuxVue had raised $43 million in venture capital funding from Kleiner Perkins, iD Ventures America, and other companies prior to the sale.
As a result of their acquisition, 21 patents were reassigned from LuxVue Technology to Apple. The patents are all very highly cited, each with a citation index above seven, and some above 100. Each of the patents reference at least 4 IEEE articles and collectively contain 104 references to IEEE science.
Apple has not yet put micro-LED’s into a product, but it has put them into prototype Apple watches and considers micro-LED’s to be a “top-priority”.9 A recent report reveals that Apple is investing $330 million to develop and produce micro-LED displays for its next generation products.
