Acquisition Deal
InTouch Health is a telehealth services company that provides virtual care solutions for both hospitals & healthcare systems.
In January 2020, Teladoc Health announced it would acquire InTouch with a deal valued at $600 million. As of July 2020, the purchase price is approximately $150 million in cash along with 4.6 million shares of Teladoc common stock.30
With $80 million in sales in 2019, InTouch is the much smaller firm. However, it supports more than 3,600 care locations around the world—including many of the top 20 U.S. health systems—as they deploy telehealth programs across their enterprise.31 Built on a cloud-based network, InTouch’s software platform creates an integrated and scalable virtual care experience.
Teladoc (which is publicly listed on the NYSE) has seen its stock price more than double since January 1, 2020, while the market is down slightly for the year. This suggests that investors are not only bullish on telehealth but are also in favor of the acquisition of InTouch.
The tele-medicine industry has seen a large boost from the COVID-19 pandemic. With hospitals currently dealing with many COVID-19 patients, telehealth services have become essential for routine medical needs. Back in March 2020, Teladoc reported that its number of visits skyrocketed and demand is expected to remain high for some time. These developments have helped improve the profile of telehealth providers, and it is likely that these services will continue post-pandemic.
The InTouch Health patents analyzed in this study are related to tele-robotics, tele-presence, and video conferencing. These patents are very highly cited—about five times as often as expected with the top two patents cited over 400 times each. The patents also rely heavily on IEEE science with an average of 26 references to IEEE articles per patent and a total of 857 IEEE references combined.
